NCIHC Mourns the Victims of the Earthquake in Haiti In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that hit the island yesterday, the NCIHC expresses its deepest sorrow and support for those affected by the tragedy. December 18, 2009 National Open Call: Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters: Paving the Way We would like to thank everyone who was able to participate in our Open Call on December 18th. We truly appreciated your participation, support and opinions. The Open Call provided an in-depth look at what is involved in creating the kind of professional certifications and employer-valued credentials. Four commissioners from the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) provided listeners with breaking news about what to look for and expect in January 2010, as well as which area of healthcare interpreting has the highest need for certification-and why CCHI will respond to that need first. October 13, 2009 NCIHC Announces First Executive Director Gem P. Daus, M.A. has been named as the first Executive Director of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC). Mr. Daus will lead the organization and work to implement a strategic plan that secures the NCIHC as the expert national resource on language access issues in health care. Daus’ presence will provide an important and unique opportunity to work more closely with NCIHC members and stakeholders in meeting their diverse needs. Click here to find out more.
September 15, 2009 Launch of Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters The NCIHC joins many key stakeholders around the country in applauding the launch of the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI). CCHI is the first certification commission created by interpreters for interpreters and the public good. CCHI will create a national, valid, credible vendor-neutral certification program for healthcare interpreters. Its goal is to ensure the competency of interpreters through an accredited, professional certification program so that communication barriers do not affect access to, and quality of, care. August 29, 2009 NCIHC Mourns the Loss of Senator Kennedy The National Council on Interpreting in Health Care joins others around the country in mourning the passing of U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy. For those who believe in the right to quality health care for all persons, regardless of language, national origin, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, or other barrier, there was no greater champion. His legacy on civil rights, immigration, and health care are an inspiration to those of us who strive to carry on his work to make this a better country for all.
August 21, 2009 National Standards for Healthcare Interpreter Training Programs The National Council on Interpreting in Health Care is currently working on developing National Standards for Healthcare Interpreter Training Programs. Funded in part by a generous grant from The California Endowment, this national consensus-building process will result in guidelines to assure that training programs are teaching interpreters appropriate content with effective methods. July 8, 2009 Joint Commission Proposed Requirements to Advance Effective Communication, Cultural Competence, and Patient-Centered Care The Joint Commission is proposing accreditation requirements to help hospitals better address effective communication, cultural competence, and patient-centered care. Although many aspects of effective communication, cultural competence, and patient-centered care are currently supported by existing requirements, the proposed requirements have the potential to further improve the safety and quality of care for all patients. Comments on the Proposed Requirements to Advance Effective Communication, Cultural Competence, and Patient-Centered Care for the Hospital Accreditation Program will be gathered for 6 weeks beginning on June 8, 2009. May 7, 2009 National Standards for Healthcare Interpreter Training Programs. The National Council on Interpreting in Health Care is pleased to announce the formal initiation of the development of National Standards for Healthcare Interpreter Training Programs. Funded in part by a generous grant from The California Endowment, this national consensus-building process will result in guidelines to assure that training programs are teaching interpreters appropriate content with effective methods. As a first step in developing National Standards for Healthcare Interpreter Training, the NCIHC is seeking proposals from qualified researchers to conduct a literature review regarding interpreter competencies and effective teaching methodologies.
Standards, Training and Certification Committee Brings a New Document to the NCIHC Working Paper Series The work of interpreters and translators is related but different, each requiring distinct skills and training. But healthcare interpreters are frequently asked to provide sight translation, or even written translation, in the course of their interpreting work. How far should interpreters go in providing these services? What are the implications for healthcare systems and for interpreter trainers?
