JORDANA AVITAL
Running for Director of the NCIHC Board of Directors

My work has consisted of both virtual and personal medical interpreting. I graduated with a B.S. in linguistics with a concentration in ASL interpreting and I have been nationally certified since 2018. I have my Masters in interpretation science and communication equity. Through my Masters program I worked on researching interpreting dynamics in support group settings for mental health. Ever since I have been motivated to develop a curriculum to provide interpreters with access to best practices and new information in our field. I have presented at both local and national level conferences and I have been involved with the interpreting community across the country and internationally. I am currently on the advisory board for a local college’s interpretation program that I joined to help elevate the quality of interpretation we provide locally by starting with the source of our interpreters, their education programs. Currently I work for Spring Institute, a non profit organization that works with immigrants and refugees where I train interpreters and providers on how to work effectively with interpreters. My work has allowed me to provide low to no cost training to interpreters on subjects such as VRI, medical interpreting and self care for interpreters. I have seen how different states' laws and agencies work and how it impacts the work of medical interpreters. Over the past few years I have been getting more involved in the local community in order to enact change to elevate our practices and standards for medical interpretation. I want to be a part of NCIHC because I have seen the work it has done and resources it has provided for my community. Our field is still growing which requires leadership to make changes for the better of the communities we serve. It would be an honor to be a part of that change.
