PEARL SWASEY
Running for Director of the NCIHC Board of Directors

As a dedicated language access advocate with seven impactful years as a medical interpreter, I am honored to nominate myself for the Director position at NCIHC. My expertise extends beyond interpretation, encompassing quality assurance, training, mentorship, and advocacy initiatives dedicated to enhancing language access for Limited English Proficiency (LEP) populations. The invaluable frontline experience as a NBCMI certified interpreter has equipped me with a profound understanding of the challenges faced by Limited English Proficiency individuals and the critical role interpreters play in bridging linguistic and cultural barriers in healthcare settings. My role as a quality assurance specialist and trainer allows me to extend my impact significantly. For the last four years I've trained and coached thousands of interpreters globally, emphasizing skill development, standards of practice, language justice and raising awareness of vicarious trauma. Tailored workshops, conferences, and education webinars have been my avenue to champion interpreter education and elevate language access standards. Central to my contributions has been the development of recognition programs in my current organization designed to engage linguists, recognizing their pivotal role in bridging language barriers. These initiatives have not only fostered a sense of belonging but also elevated the standard of language access, promoting a culture of excellence among interpreters. My passion for language access transcends professional boundaries. I am deeply committed to ongoing education, constantly engaging in opportunities that foster language justice. Through my LinkedIn community of over 6,000 connections, I've cultivated an environment conducive to discussions on language access, advocating for the elevation of standards and the amplification of marginalized voices. Moreover, my credential to train bilingual staff positions me uniquely to drive transformative programs in 2024. I aim to leverage this expertise to create comprehensive education programs focused on enhancing provider education. These programs will illuminate the crucial nuances of effectively working with interpreters and engaging with multicultural patients, enriching the healthcare landscape with inclusive practices. My candidacy embodies a deep understanding of interpreter and LEP challenges. If entrusted with this role, I will leverage my expertise in interpreter education, quality assurance, and advocacy to drive NCIHC's mission. I aim to foster a community-driven approach, nurturing diverse perspectives for innovative solutions in equitable language access. I am prepared to commit the necessary time and effort, recognizing the significance of steering NCIHC's mission, ensuring that the organization remains at the forefront of initiatives aimed at addressing the evolving challenges in language access. I humbly seek your support to contribute my expertise, passion, and unwavering commitment to NCIHC's transformative journey. Earlier this year I was granted the NCIHC Membership Fee Reduction which not only symbolizes your trust in my potential impact within NCIHC but also solidifies my unwavering commitment to advocating for equitable language access. This initiative reaffirms my dedication to actively participating in committees and nurturing an inclusive environment where diverse perspectives converge to create groundbreaking solutions. Thank you for considering my candidacy. With gratitude, Pearl
