KAREN NGUYEN Running for Director of the NCIHC Board of Directors
I am honored to run for the director position, motivated by a dedication to advancing the interpreting profession, promoting equitable language access, and fostering collaboration within our community. With extensive practical experience, academic background, and a focus on ethical, culturally responsive practices, I believe I can contribute effectively to our organization’s leadership.
As a certified American Sign Language interpreter with over ten years of experience across community, medical, and mental health settings, I understand firsthand the challenges interpreters face daily. My Master’s degree in Healthcare Interpreting from the Rochester Institute of Technology has strengthened my knowledge of healthcare communication, ethics, and cultural competence. I am also pursuing a Ph.D. in the Psychological and Professional Dynamics of American Sign Language Interpreting at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, focusing on factors affecting interpreter well-being, field specific stressors, and workplace factors. Additionally, I serve as an Associate Lecturer preparing future interpreters to navigate complex ethical, cultural, and psychological issues, emphasizing social determinants of health, bioethics, and healthcare disparities.
Throughout my career, I have demonstrated a commitment to advocacy and professionalism. I hold a Qualified Mental Health Interpreting certification and have collaborated with organizations such as the Wisconsin Psychiatric Association to improve mental health interpreting standards. I’ve traveled to public hearings to raise awareness about the risks of replacing qualified interpreters with artificial intelligence in court settings. These efforts reflect my dedication to upholding high standards, ensuring justice, and promoting equitable, culturally responsive interpretation.
My vision centers on advancing equitable language access in healthcare and beyond. I am dedicated to working closely with members and stakeholders to develop initiatives that move the profession forward and address emerging challenges. I also support ongoing research and data collection to keep our organization responsive, relevant, and impactful. My aim is to build partnerships and engage leaders across the healthcare field to strengthen compliance, elevate standards, and secure the right to meaningful language access for everyone.
I serve our community with integrity, promote growth, and enhance inclusivity. My background, academic pursuits, and advocacy efforts have prepared me to lead effectively. I humbly ask for your support to serve as director, and I look forward to working together to strengthen our profession and its vital role in society.
