NIB Voices

In 2025, the Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics (NIB) published a compelling issue of Voices titled “Stories from Those Who Interpret in Healthcare.” This journal, enriched with real-life narratives, is complemented by a comprehensive teaching guide. The National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) played a role in the creation of this journal by providing financial support and facilitating connections between researchers and interpreters who generously shared their experiences. As a token of appreciation, NCIHC received exclusive access to the Voices journal and teaching guide.

You can access them both here.

Why These Stories Matter:

  • These stories offer a unique window into the real-life experiences of healthcare interpreters, providing invaluable insights into their daily challenges and triumphs.

  • By sharing their narratives, interpreters highlight the emotional and psychological aspects of their work, helping others understand the profound impact of vicarious trauma.

  • The accompanying teaching guide offers structured approaches for utilizing these stories in educational settings, making them a powerful tool for training future interpreters and healthcare professionals.

Utilizing the Stories:

  • Incorporate these stories into training sessions to provide practical examples.

  • Facilitate group discussions around these narratives to explore ethical dilemmas and develop problem-solving skills.

  • Use specific cases from the journal to analyze and understand the complexities of medical interpreting.
