MATEO RUTHERFORD
MATEO RUTHERFORD
Running for Director of the NCIHC Board of Directors

I would love to work with all the incredibly talented people on the NCIHC Board. I'll briefly summarize my experience in the field of healthcare interpreting in the US.

For 12 years I was the supervisor, manager, director of medical interpreting services at UCSF Health.

I was a subject matter expert, then Commissioner, Vice Chair, Chair, Secretary for the Certification Commission of Healthcare Interpreters.

I am a member of NCIHC, CHIA, UTIA, OHCIA.

I have taught medical interpreting at Community College of San Francisco (CCSF), Laney Community College and OHCIA. At Laney Community College I created the medical certificate program consisting of the following courses: Intro to Medical Interpreting, Advanced Interpreting and Certification Exam Prep, Consecutive Interpreting, and a series of 1-unit advanced topic courses on genetics, palliative care, autism, etc.

I have presented many webinars and conference presentations for CCHI and at CHIA, OHCIA, OTIA, UTIA, ATA.

I have a master's degree in biology from the University of California, Berkeley and in Spanish T&I from the Monterey Institute of International Studies.

Next semester I will not be teaching biology courses at Laney, so I hope to have more time to dedicate to healthcare interpreting. I have worked with many of the current members of the NCIHC Board and would be honored to be part of the team to help move healthcare interpreting forward in the US.
