Running for Director of the NCIHC Board of Directors
My name is Tatiana González-Cestari, and I serve as the Director of Language Service Advocacy at Equiti Health/Martti. I humbly submit my nomination for a director position at the National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare (NCIHC). During my previous term as a board member (2021-2023), I was involved in advancing initiatives such as the language access congress, the revised bylaws, Access: The NCIHC Journal, the OnTheRoad webinars on language access, the annotated bibliography, among others. I continue volunteering in the journal, education, and OnTheRoad work groups, and the Policy, Education and Research Committee. I have also represented NCIHC during a few events.
Serving and empowering others have guided my careers and projects throughout my life. My diverse professional healthcare background (pharmacist, pharmacologist, researcher, professor, leader, and remote interpreter), has led me to always consider multiple angles but also advocate for integration of the healthcare team and its support systems. I have worked together with every stakeholder in our industry to catalyze collaboration; my involvement in the National Association of Latino Healthcare Executives Central Florida Chapter supports this mission.
In my role at Equiti, I help implement integral, objective, efficient, and innovative approaches to language access, best practices, documentation, cultural sensitivity, and compliance in hospitals. I would like to return to the NCIHC board and bring the unique diversity of the stakeholders and background represented in me to the continued advancement of our industry. NCIHC is a great platform to learn and to positively impact professionals, patients, and our health system. I have contributed to increase the visibility of our industry and to educate individuals on the true meaning of providing access to communication. I have worked to unify aspects of our "melting pot" in the language industry, including the integration of signed and spoken language interpreters; qualified, certified, and licensed linguists; and the global, national, and local networks of professionals. This has been crucial to provide access and support one another above all. I have trained thousands of interpreters and translators and hundreds of clinicians, mentored various healthcare professionals, and developed resources in basic and advanced topics in healthcare as well as in interpreting ethics, skills and protocols. I assisted in the implementation of situational learning for remote interpreters and specialized continuing education opportunities. I frequently present at conferences, which has also helped my mission of elevating and empowering the interpreting profession as well as my own growth.
I have been involved in research projects on language access and patient-centered outcomes as a subject and as a research team member since 2016. Part of my work in this area includes engaging interpreters in all aspects of research.
I proudly co-authored The Remote Interpreter textbook and contributed to its training curriculum (a collaboration between Cross Cultural Communications, Boostlingo, and Equiti Health/Martti), uphold the NCIHC's national code of ethics and standards of practice in health care, and support the communicative autonomy of all.
