“Are you ready for this?” Integrating Topic Preparation into Interpreter Training

with Rachel E. Herring, PhD

Preparation prior to assignments is a fundamental skill for all interpreters, and thus an important skill to address in interpreter training. In this webinar we will explore theoretical and practical aspects of teaching and learning about topic preparation. We will discuss the importance of topic preparation and general knowledge acquisition for interpreting performance; strategies for effective topic preparation; and finding and evaluating resources; and planning and structuring teaching and learning of topic preparation skills.

Note: The presentation will include some examples of resources and practical exercise, but the content and material are intended for interpreter trainers.

Learning Objectives:

• Discuss the importance of effective preparation for assignments
• Discuss approaches and strategies for effective preparation prior to assignments
• Discuss theoretical and practical aspects of teaching topic preparation skills

About the Speaker

Rachel E. Herring, PhD

Rachel E. Herring was Director of the Translation and Interpreting Program at Century College (Minnesota) until 2025 and is currently serving as Dean at the same institution. She has worked as a freelance and staff interpreter for 20 years, primarily in healthcare settings, and most recently at Children’s Minnesota.  She holds an M.A. in Translation and Interpreting from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, a Masters of Advanced Studies in Interpreter Training and a PhD in Interpreting from the University of Geneva. She has presented and published on interpreting and interpreter training in a variety of venues.
